What actually happened

The official appraisal records a story, still unverified, that the house was used as a comfort house for Japanese soldiers during the Occupation of 1941 to 1945.

The history

Built between 1915 and 1921 for the Shanghai merchant To family, the red-brick Colonial Eclectic house stayed in the family until 1988 and has been vacant for many years; it was confirmed a Grade 1 historic building in 2009.

What people report

Local tradition holds the empty house is haunted and Hong Kongers know it as the Wan Chai haunted house; visitors have reported lights and figures behind its windows.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
