What actually happened

In 1600, Torii Mototada defended the castle through a 13-day siege before he and many surviving defenders died by ritual suicide.

The history

The late-16th-century castle was destroyed, rebuilt and besieged. Torii Mototada and his defenders died there in 1600; today's keep is a modern replica near the original site.

What people report

Floorboards said to bear the defenders' blood were reused as temple ceilings around Kyoto, a tradition remembered as the chitenjo, or blood ceilings.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
