One real event is removed from history. The world is put back together without it. Each story then follows one ordinary person through a single day in the world that resulted.
Removing a catastrophe does not give you a better world. It gives you a different one, with its own way of going wrong. That is what these stories are about, and it is why none of them ends in a paradise.
