What actually happened

Japanese military police imprisoned and tortured hundreds of Filipino and American captives here during the Second World War.

The history

Spanish forces built the stone fort between 1589 and 1592. It later served several occupying powers and was heavily damaged during the 1945 Battle of Manila.

What people report

Visitors and staff have reported footsteps and shadowed figures around former cells, stories rooted in the fort's documented wartime deaths.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
