What actually happened

Rajasthan Tourism records a once-prosperous fortified settlement with more than 9,000 houses that declined after 1720, leaving its markets and palaces in ruins.

The history

Raja Madho Singh built the fortified town in the 17th century. Ruined palaces, temples, houses and marketplaces remain beneath the Aravalli hills.

What people report

Local traditions tell of a holy man's warning and a magician's curse. Rajasthan Tourism describes the fort as one of India's best-known haunted places.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
