What actually happened

Each year from September to November, migratory birds descend at night towards the lights of the village and are killed, a phenomenon Assam Tourism calls the alleged bird suicides.

The history

Jatinga is a hill village about 9 km from Haflong in Dima Hasao district; the killing of the disoriented birds has been banned and the village now hosts bird watching and a bird festival.

What people report

Local tradition long held that the birds came to the valley to die, and Assam Tourism describes it as a mystical valley; the official explanation is the lights and peculiar topography.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
