What actually happened

Gertrude McManamey, the headmaster's last surviving daughter, bequeathed the property to the National Trust in 1979, ending nearly 150 years of private occupation.

The history

Built as an inn in the 1830s, the complex ran as a residence, guest house and from 1907 to 1936 as John McManamey's Woodford Academy school; it is the oldest group of colonial buildings in the Blue Mountains.

What people report

The National Trust lists ghost hunting among the Academy's offerings, and participants have reported figures and voices in the former schoolrooms.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
