What actually happened

Men were hanged at the gaol between 29 May 1877 and 28 June 1904, when Ah Check became the last person executed there; after 1914 it was reduced to a police gaol and hangings could no longer occur.

The history

A lock-up built in 1847 to 1848 was proclaimed a gaol on 12 July 1859, and the site closed on 31 August 1966; Dubbo Regional Council is now its custodian.

What people report

Visitors have reported footsteps and cold spots in the cells and near the gallows, a tradition the council's own interpretation does not promote.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
