What actually happened

William Larnach built the house from 1871; after severe financial and family crises, he died by suicide in New Zealand's Parliament Buildings in 1898.

The history

The elaborate Otago Peninsula residence later served as a hospital, retreat, wartime post and private home before a major restoration began in 1967.

What people report

Stories attach apparitions and unexplained sounds to members of the Larnach family, though modern guides also correct exaggerated versions of those tales.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
