What actually happened

The hospital closed in 1961 after the antibiotic streptomycin cut the need for tuberculosis beds, and the remaining patients were moved to Hazelwood Sanatorium.

The history

Opened in 1910 as a two-storey facility for 40 to 50 tuberculosis patients during Louisville's White Plague outbreak. A five-storey building for more than 400 patients opened on 17 October 1926.

What people report

Guides tell of shadow figures in the corridors and of the body chute, a tunnel said to have carried the dead away from patients' sight.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
