What actually happened

Designed for about 250 patients, the asylum held more than 2,400 by the 1950s in deteriorating conditions before closing in 1994.

The history

Built between 1858 and 1881 to Richard Andrews' Kirkbride plan, it is the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in North America and admitted its first patients in 1864.

What people report

Staff and overnight guests have reported voices and moving objects on the wards, and the site runs ghost hunts alongside its history tours.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
