A violent escape attempt in 1946 was followed by years of relative calm until the breakout of 1962, the last serious attempt before the prison closed.
The history
Between 1934 and 1963 Alcatraz was a federal penitentiary holding inmates such as Al Capone, Robert Stroud and Alvin Karpis. It is now part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
