What actually happened

On 10 July 1873 a supply cart tipped into the water at the construction site, drowning Mary and Eliza Pittee, the superintendent's daughters, and a 10 year old girl; four year old Carrie survived.

The history

The 165 foot tower was built between 1871 and 1874 and first lit by keeper William Russell on 15 October 1874, replacing a Spanish coquina tower.

What people report

The museum's night tours report footsteps on the stairs and children in Victorian dress, which it says it cannot explain.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
