What actually happened

The station closed on 16 March 1984 and was reserved as part of Sydney Harbour National Park, leaving thousands of sandstone engravings carved by quarantined passengers.

The history

The North Head Quarantine Station isolated arriving ships and passengers suspected of carrying smallpox, plague and Spanish influenza from 1832 until 1984.

What people report

The site runs its own Ghostly Encounters and Ghost Trackers tours, and guests have reported apparitions in the former hospital and shower blocks.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
