What actually happened

The works shut down in 1960, leaving a company town empty in the Atacama; it was declared a national monument in 1970, bought at auction by the Corporación Museo del Salitre in 2002 and World Heritage listed with Santa Laura in 2005.

The history

Founded in 1872 as the La Palma nitrate works by the Peruvian Nitrate Company, the site was renamed Santiago Humberstone in 1934 and at its peak housed more than 3,000 people.

What people report

Visitors have reported children's voices in the abandoned school and figures in the theatre, and the empty town is widely described in Chile as haunted by its former workers.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
