What actually happened

On 29 November 1892 a guest registered as Lottie A. Bernard was found dead of a gunshot wound ruled self-inflicted; she was later identified as Kate Morgan.

The history

Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story opened the hotel in 1888 with more than 400 rooms, and it was named a National Historic Landmark in 1977.

What people report

Staff and guests have reported flickering lights and a woman in Victorian dress near Kate Morgan's former room, and the hotel hosted a year-long parapsychology study in 1992.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
