What actually happened

The Bank of Montreal kept the building as a branch until it closed for the last time in 1982, after which it stood largely unused until its restoration.

The history

Built in 1885 by architects Darling and Curry as the Bank of Montreal's Toronto head office, the rococo hall with its 45 foot stained glass dome served as head office until 1949 and now houses the Stanley Cup.

What people report

The Hall itself notes the rumoured presence of Dorothy, a former teller said to have died by her own hand in the building after a failed love affair with the bank manager.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
