What actually happened

The prison burned during the riot of 1988 and was decommissioned on 8 November 1991, its last prisoners transferred to Casuarina Prison.

The history

Built by convict labour between 1852 and 1859 from limestone quarried on site, Fremantle Prison held convicts until 1886 and then served as Western Australia's maximum security gaol from 1887 to 1991.

What people report

The prison's own Torchlight Tour leads visitors through the darkened cell blocks with what it calls sordid and ghastly stories, and guests have reported unexplained sounds near the gallows.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
