What actually happened

From 10 to 15 November 1777 some 228 British guns bombarded the fort's 10 cannon, at one point firing 1,000 cannonballs in an hour, until the garrison slipped away by night.

The history

Americans secured Mud Island in 1775. The fort became a military prison in 1863, where Private William H. Howe was executed on 26 August 1864, and was decommissioned in 1954 after 183 years.

What people report

Visitors have reported a screaming woman near the officers' quarters and a faceless man in the casemates.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
