What actually happened

By the 1960s the hotel faced demolition; a $4 million restoration nicknamed Operation Teacup saved it.

The history

Designed by Francis Rattenbury for the Canadian Pacific Railway, the Empress opened on 20 January 1908 after four years of construction; the south wing followed in 1912.

What people report

Staff tell of a figure resembling the architect pacing the halls and of a maid still working the sixth floor.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
