What actually happened

The Dutch ousted the Portuguese in 1637, and the castle was ceded to the British on 6 April 1872; the museums board records enslaved people held here from the early 16th century in exchange for gold and ivory.

The history

Founded by the Portuguese in 1482 as the first major European building in tropical Africa, it is now a historical museum and part of the UNESCO-listed forts and castles of Ghana.

What people report

Visitors to the dungeons have reported oppressive air and unexplained sounds, and local tradition says the spirits of those held there have not left.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
