What actually happened

From 1937 to 1940 Norman Baker ran the building as a cancer clinic on false claims of a cure, until he was arrested and imprisoned for mail fraud.

The history

Built between 1884 and 1886 on Crescent Mountain as a luxury resort, the hotel later ran as a women's college until 1934. In 2019 archaeologists unearthed hundreds of bottles of Baker's secret formula and jars of medical specimens on the grounds.

What people report

The hotel calls itself America's most haunted hotel; guests have reported a stonemason named Michael in room 218 and figures in the former morgue.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
