What actually happened

Robert Dunsmuir died in April 1889, before the house was finished, and never lived in it.

The history

Coal baron Robert Dunsmuir built the castle between 1887 and 1890 on 28 acres; his widow Joan lived there with 17 fireplaces and electric light until her death in 1908. It later served as a military hospital in 1919 and Victoria College from 1921 to 1946.

What people report

Staff tell of a woman in white on the stairs and piano notes from the empty drawing room.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
