What actually happened

After transportation to Van Diemen's Land ended in 1853, the complex passed through use as invalid depots, a boys' reformatory, a contagious diseases hospital and a hospital for the insane before being auctioned in 1905 and almost entirely demolished.

The history

The government bought a failed distillery for £2,000 in 1827 and in late December 1828 transferred the first convict women to the site, which ran as a female factory until the main site was proclaimed a gaol in 1856.

What people report

Local tradition holds that the cries of women and infants are heard in the empty yards at night, a story the site's own tours leave to the historical record.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
