What actually happened

Hangings at the gaol claimed 42 lives, including Ellen Thompson, executed in 1887 for the murder of her husband, and Ernest Austin, the last person hanged there in 1913.

The history

Brisbane's main prison from the 1880s, Boggo Road gained its surviving No. 2 Division in 1903 as the State Prison for Women and closed in 1989 after a decade of riots, hunger strikes and rooftop protests.

What people report

Commercial ghost tours have long claimed the cells are haunted, Austin among the named spirits, though the historical society that runs the museum publicly disputes those stories.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
