What actually happened

After an 1890s seance in which a spirit claimed to be a nun buried in unhallowed ground, a skeleton said to be 400 years old was found beneath the south terrace.

The history

The present house was built in the late 1700s on the site of a medieval building and remodelled in 1905 by Charles Peach. The Thomas-Stanford family gave it to Brighton Corporation in 1932.

What people report

Brighton and Hove Museums records 20th-century reports of a grey-clad woman on the staircase and roof, a floating hand on a four-poster bed and a child riding a toy tractor on the croquet lawn.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
