What actually happened

The castle's own timeline records King Malcolm II murdered on the site in 1034 and Janet Douglas, Lady Glamis, burned at the stake in 1537 on false accusations of treason.

The history

Robert II granted the Thanage of Glamis to Sir John Lyon in 1372 and the Lyon family, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, have held it since. The Queen Mother grew up here and Princess Margaret was born here in 1930.

What people report

Local tradition holds that a Grey Lady, identified with Lady Glamis, haunts the chapel and that Earl Beardie still plays cards in a sealed room; the castle stages a ghouls and ghosts event each Halloween.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
