What actually happened

17 men were executed here between 1854 and 1961, the last being Robert McGladdery.

The history

Designed by Charles Lanyon in 1841 and opened in summer 1845, the gaol held suffragettes in 1914 and Eamon de Valera in 1924 before closing on 31 March 1996.

What people report

Staff and visitors tell of footsteps and figures in the condemned cell and the tunnel to the courthouse, and the gaol runs its own paranormal tours.

That paragraph is reported tradition, not a claim about what is there. The history above it is sourced; the stories are recorded because people tell them.
