What actually happened
During the German occupation of 1940 to 1945, 42 Norwegian resistance members were executed at the fortress.
The history
Construction began around 1290 under King Håkon V, who made it the royal seat when Oslo became the capital. It withstood repeated sieges and saw its last military action in 1716.
